I just received the H501S-S-H Advanced with the 906A w/LiPo battery in transmitter. The FIRMWARE is V1.1.17. Do I need to update the FIRMWARE? I appreciate any response you have! Thanks!

There don't need to update the firmware unless your drone has specific issue need to be solved.

Yep if the H501S has FC1.1.46 and was bought in the fall it will probably have the Auto Calibrate Compass board.

Even if it has the Auto Calibrate compass you should still manually calibrate the compass at each new flight location. Once done it will remember the compass setting and you don't need to manually calibrate every time.

Don't incline the H501S more than a few degrees horizontally otherwise you will need to calibrate the Auto compass.

justjarhead... by "new flight location" do you mean your city in general? And, then rely on the autocompass calibrate feature within your locale?

City is too big an area. If you fly in a local park and move to a location a couple of blocks away re-calibrate.
