H501S - get 901A or 906A transmitter?

Post by W95 » Sat Aug 18, 2018 8:33 pm

Hi all:

I've been deliberating over a Hubsan craft and think the H501S is the way to go (although I'm still a bit intimated to make this jump). My son and I have been practicing a lot on an Ares Ethos QX130 from HobbyZone and we think we have really honed our piloting skills considering this basic quad as no GPS whatsoever. We have pretty much mastered forward flight, turns, banked turns and spirals. It has been a lot of fun. And, I should add, our main goal with this hobby is not so much the photography aspect, but further improving piloting skills now aided by GPS position and altitude hold.

I was thinking of the 502S but understand the 501S had brushless motors for longer flight time.

However, is the 901A transmitter decent? Some reviews say they don't like the plastic feel of the sticks. Even our Ethos seems to have better sticks. The 906A transmitter sure looks nicer (although very intimidating) but not sure it is worth the extra $ unless it offers any other features I'm not aware.

TIA for any input folks.

the choice really depends on what kind of range you want out of the box.
yes the H901A is plastic, does feel a little cheap but don't let that fool you.the stick response is precise. and you get up to and if your in a clear area over 300 meters. The H906A will give you up to and over 1000 meters.
if your in the US you do have to register the quad with the FAA. 1 registration however does cover all the drones you own or may own in the 3 year period it is valid..

the thing you will find most intimidating coming from the small coreless motor.is the power and speed of the H501SS, especially in altitude hold.

1 advantage of the standard is you do get a lipo battery for the transmitter in the box. the H906A takes a 3s 11.1 v lipo 2200mah which is an additional purchase. but if you go high edition, get the lipo for the remote at the same time

THIS IS NOT AN INDOOR FLYER

Thanks magicmannst! Great info!

I was worried that the sticks on the 901A look similar to the sticks on our H107C. I trust they are more sophisticated?

Also, can I set the "rate" on the transmitter (like 60%) etc. vs. expert mode while we get used to it?

What did you mean about "high edition"? Do you mean the 906A? In your last sentence you said the regular version has the LiPO battery for the transmitter but the 906A doesn't but then you said the "high" edition comes with battery for the transmitter?

cant say if they're more sophisticated,as I don't have the lower model transmitter. i can say they respond excellent for the product and price.
yes you can set sensitivity on sticks. both 901 and 906.
(pull down left stick and hold, long press right stick in center position) to get to menu.right stivk up and down through menu. push right on right stick to select
and I did mean the 906 when I said high edition.it can take a lipo (11.1 v 2200 mah) but hubsan (hubsan.com)no longer supply, or sell them you can get those off of amazon or ebay

Many people use the H901A LiPO in the H906a and it works fine The 11.1 v battery is hard to export $o the H901A battery is substituted along with the 1399mAh battery. They last over 1.5 hours on a charge.

I own a H501ss I purchased in mid June, 2018 with standard transmitter. I am a drone "peep" as they say in this forum. In a perfect world I think for $200 +/- this could be a perfect drone. Unfortunately it's not a perfect world. Mine was perfect for one week. As a newcomer, controlling this drone, video taping, pictures, flight distance, and flight times were amazing. Then the FPV problem raised its ugly head. Static, flashing on and off, at times unusable. I naively joined this forum thinking Hubsan would come to my rescue and assist me in correcting this problem under warranty. Many others are having this same problem. Mention the word warranty and Hubsan will go silent. If you purchase this drone and get a good one, I feel it's perfect for pilots at our level. Get a bad one and you are on your own. After a lot of research it is becoming clear that Hubsan has quality control problems which can happen. The problem is Hubsan will not admit it and pursues any option they can to void your warranty. If you purchase this drone and it works I feel you will be happy with it. There are people on this forum and other forums that will do what the can to help you with any problems. Pay your money and Hubsan will help you also. Good Luck

Thanks Bob Drev! Your message made me chuckle! It was funny and sad at the same time about Hubsan support. I guess one needs to maintain a sense of humor!

Your message also made me think perhaps getting these units from reputable ebay vendors might be a good idea vs. direct from Hubsan. Perhaps they offer an extra layer of support and insulation towards getting support but that is just a hypothesis. Sort of like having someone in your corner as they say.
