smartphone requirements

When choosing an Android smartphone that I want to use with the Zino's HT016B controller, will I need a model that supports "USB host mode" (USB-OTG)? I am asking because I know that many low-end and even some mid-range devices don't support this feature.
Generally I would assume that this feature is needed for the USB link between the smartphone and the HT016B, but since the Zino's user manual doesn't mention anything in this regard, I am wondering if this means that somehow any Android smartphone that is able to run the X-Hubsan App would work?
