Sure but the point of using the extension cables is that you do not have to modify the original cable. And when you use banana plugs, you can make one in minutes without the need to solder anything.

Some of those voltage checkers are not very accurate, I just threw one away which had an incorrect voltage reading while I have three others that are perfect. It might be that there is a difference in the cell voltage and that the charger takes a long time to balance them. If neither the cables or the battery is getting warm, I would give it some more time as balancing can take more time than the actual charging process.
